Progressive education is governed by the tenets that learning is fundamentally a multisensory experience in which children are active participants and that children learn by solving problems that are real and important to them. In a progressive environment, children are involved in an integrated program rather study subjects in isolation, and the focus is on the learning process rather than any single outcome. Children are given significant autonomy in the direction of their work while also discovering how to work cooperatively with others. Along with the educational values of critical thinking, curiosity, self-motivation and self-reliance, a progressive school emphasizes the social values of community, democratic citizenship, and the pursuit of equity.
